Oregon grape, shining (Berberis aquifolium)

Oregon grape is the state flower of Oregon and bears showy clusters of bright yellow flowers in early spring. This plant spreads slowly by rhizomes, and the yellow roots are known to be medicinal and can be used to produce a brilliant yellow dye. The stiff holly-like leaves often turn red in the fall and new growth in the spring is generally red as well. The dusty, dark blue berries are edible, but quite tart, and can be made into jams and jellies.
